In his nearly 30 years on the radio in La Crosse, Brucie Bumchuckles pulled a wide variety of pranks, including broadcasting for an entire morning as if he were heading for La Crosse from Madison on one of Goodyear’s blimps. Severson hooked up with an airline pilot who posed as the blimp pilot and had convincing enough banter and sound effects that people were gathered at UW-La Crosse’s Veterans Stadium to watch the arrival.

Another time he ran a fake commercial saying that the local newspaper (implying the La Crosse Tribune) had switched to a morning paper and was delivering free papers to everyone. If people hadn’t received a free paper, the commercial said, they should call the paper and ask for one.

But the one that made him a legend was the 1986 fake phone company commercial that advised people to put bags around their phones because the phone lines were going to be cleaned that day.

Here are some of the highlights from his career, including some snippets of banter from his days on Hit 105 with Jon Drew in the mid- to late-1980s.
