A fight between two women over a man this week ended after one bit off the top of the other's left ring finger, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday.

Shanijah T. Carter, 18, of Sun Prairie, was charged Thursday with battery causing great bodily harm for allegedly biting off the end of Erica Darboe's finger during a fight over her relationship with a man who is the father of Carter's yet-unborn child, according to the complaint.

Darboe told police that on Monday night, Carter started a fight with her, which led to the two of them grappling with one another. After it was broken up, Darboe told police, she felt pain and noticed that her left ring finger had been severed nearly down to the uppermost joint.

Carter told police that she didn't deliberately bite Darboe's finger but remembered spitting it out. A 16-year-old girl who was present during the fight, however, said she heard Carter say, "I bit the (expletive) out of her finger," according to the complaint.

Carter is free on a signature bond.

" This young lady was merely practicing an alternative lifestyle that we must be more tolerant of. We should refrain from passing judgment on her or imposing our morality on her. We need to respect her right to choose. "
