Each year September marks the month where American Red Cross chapters across the country work to help individuals, families, schools and businesses take action to "Be Red Cross Ready" for all types of disasters and emergencies by: 1) getting a kit, 2) making a plan and 3) being informed.
This year these activities are even more meaningful to the residents of the Coulee Region as we recover from two national disasters and work to support those in the gulf coast affected by Hurricane Gustav. "Now more than ever we understand preparing ahead of time will help you respond better in a disaster or emergency, and may even save your life," said Jeneen Ablan, chair of the chapter's board of directors. "Prepared citizens mean better prepared communities. The Scenic Bluffs Chapter will always be there to provide relief in times of disasters, and want to teach people the skills they need to prepare for and keep their families safer in a disaster or emergency."
On Sept. 11 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., the Scenic Bluffs Chapter will hold an open house to provide an opportunity for community members to visit the newly remodeled chapter headquarters at 2927 Losey Blvd. in La Crosse. This remodeling project's goal was to provide a more efficient use of building space as well as respond to accessibility issues.
After the open house, the chapter will hold its annual volunteer picnic to celebrate the many individuals who work to provide the services of the Red Cross organization. All Red Cross volunteers are encouraged to attend and may RSVP by calling 788-1000 before Wednesday noon.
In addition the Scenic Bluffs Chapter will hold a variety of events to promote preparedness. Schedules may be obtained online at www.arcscenicbluffs.org or by calling 788-1000.
