An Oakhill Correctional Institution guard is on administrative leave and under investigation by Fitchburg police after two inmates claimed she had sexual relationships with them.
According to a search warrant filed Thursday in Dane County Circuit Court, one inmate at the minimum security prison claimed on July 14 that he had a relationship with the female guard from January to July. The second initially denied having a relationship with her, but admitted it on Aug. 18, the warrant states. He claimed she wrote him love letters after he was placed in segregation after she was placed on administrative leave, according to the warrant.
The guard is not being named because she has not been arrested or charged with a crime. State Department of Corrections spokesman John Dipko said she has been on paid administrative leave since July 14.
Sex between prison staff and inmates is forbidden by state law.
The search warrant, seeking evidence to support a second-degree sexual assault charge, sought a DNA sample and a handwriting sample from the guard, both of which have been collected. The DNA would be compared to any DNA found on letters and envelopes sent to the second inmate. The handwriting sample would be compared to handwriting in the letters.
Gerald Mowris, the guard's attorney, said he understands the collection of DNA is part of the investigative process and the search warrant simply presents an allegation.
"I think I can safely say that I don't believe they will find any of her DNA on those materials, nor will they find that this is her handwriting," Mowris said.
