It took a little longer than anticipated, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently completed the purchase of 75.4 acres of Brice Prairie land from the Mathy Construction Co. to make way for a new regional FWS office and recreational area.

The land, which is now part of the National Wildlife Refuge System, is being used as farmland but will eventually be restored to sand prairie. After restoration, it will include walking trails with interpretative signing, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Sale of the land, which was part of a highly publicized debate in 2003 over Mathy's plans to build an asphalt plant, was proposed in 2006, but money for the sale could not be found.

Under the current farm lease, which expires in late January 2009, no hunting is permitted. Because the Fish and Wildlife Service assumed the terms of the lease, no hunting or trapping will be permitted this fall.

The subject of future hunting and trapping on the land will be addressed in an Environmental Assessment due later this year.

I second that wrote on Sep 7, 2008 8:27 AM:

" Sue Cejka, and also Dave Paudler and Nancy Johnson, were instrumental in this very smart direction for Brice Prairie and the Town. Proper use for fragile land and area. Sue and Dave and Nancy all provided years of VERY productive service to the Town in all areas. If the public were only aware of the full time hours and the extensive meetings these individuals provided during their years in office, I believe they yet would be in office. "

Thank Sue Cejka Too wrote on Sep 6, 2008 3:08 PM:

" One person who work very very hard on getting this land to be sold to FWS in the beginning was Sue Cejka. She was on the town Board at that time and worked many countless hours for the Town and it's citizens. She deserves recognition. We all know the Government works slowly--especially the Federal Government. Too bad Sue is not in office to receive the just praise she deserves.
Way to go Cejka.
Now has the current NEW board members gone to work on one single project? Guess not as they do not meet in committees. No meetings mean no work. "

" It is good to see appropriate use of the land on Brice Prairie. Proper use of an area that should be largely preserved due to its location in the wildlife area. ....and no threat to ground water from the USFW use! "
