Despite a persistant rumor to the contrary, Holmen police are not investigating a sexual assault alleged to have happened during Kornfest on the Halfway Creek Trail, although a recent assault on the trail might have sparked the rumor.

Holmen Police Chief Mike McHugh said nobody has reported a sexual assault on the trail during Kornfest or otherwise. There was an assault of a 14-year-old girl on the trail, however, that happened the week before Kornfest, which McHugh said might account for the sexual assault rumor.

The girl reported the assault about 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11. She said earlier that afternoon she was biking on the trail when she was stopped by a couple of younger boys. The boys first demanded her money, then pulled her off her bike, dragged her, threw sand in her face and attempted to steal her backpack.

The girl suffered cuts, scrapes and bruises in the assault.

Police have made no arrests in the case and don’t have much to go on. “She couldn’t provide much of a description,” McHugh said.
