When Onalaska and Holmen area students do well, we want to hear about it. The Onalaska Community Life and Holmen Courier publish news about student achievements from elementary to college. Here is the latest good news about Onalaska and Holmen area students:

Susan Karlman, a 2002 Holmen high school graduate, will receive a masters of science in nursing degree from the University of Iowa adult and gerontologic nurse practitioner program Aug. 1. She is also eligible for certification as a long-term care administrator. She will pursue her practice in Walla Walla, Wash.

Onalaska Luther High School graduate Jon Dable, an airman first class in the U.S. Air Force, recently completed 15 months of study in Mandarin Chinese at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, Calif. He was awarded the Provost’s Award and was the only member of his graduating class to earn the highest possible score. Dable was selected with another airman to give the graduation address in both English and Chinese. He was awarded an associate of arts degree in foreign language and is now stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas, where he is continuing his training to be an airplane interpreter.

Molly Fitzpatrick of Onalaska was named to the spring 2008 dean’s list at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Jennie Lenz of Holmen and Tara Kinsman of Onalaska were named to the spring 2008 dean’s list at Lakeshore Technical College in Cleveland, Wis.

Courtney Larson of Onalaska graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Elizabeth Brock of Onalaska was named to the 2008 spring semester dean’s list at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She also was recognized for becoming a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization.

Anna Bierce and Taylor Siolka, both of Holmen, were named to the spring 2008 honors list at Concordia University in Mequon, Wis.

The following area students graduated at spring 2008 commencement ceremonies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison:

  • HOLMEN: Suchita Shah, BS (with distinction), biology; Nou Vang, MSW, social work

  • ONALASKA: Melissa Witmer Anderson, Ph.D., biophysics; Eric Aspenson, BS, biology; Joseph Berg, BS (with distinction), biology; Katherine Herro, BS, art; Lindsey Johnson, BS, biology/psychology; Serina Jolivette, BM, music education; Kathryn Lee, BA, psychology; Elizabeth Rommes, BS, human development and family studies; Abigail Roth, BS (with distinction), human development and family studies; Kevin Severson, BBA, finance, investment and banking/real estate and urban land economics; Samantha Shepard, BBA (with distinction), marketing.

    Army National Guard Pvt. Alyson Swanke has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. A 2007 graduate of Onalaska High School, she is the daughter of Christine Antony of Onalaska and Jason Swanke of Mount Horeb, Wis.

    Levi Funk of Onalaska graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a bachelor of business administration degree in economics.
