County offers health clinics, screenings

The La Crosse County Health Department offers a number of clinics and screenings every month, including the following. For more information about any of the services or to make an appointment, call 785-9723:

  • WELL-CHILD HEALTH SCREENING: Health screenings for all children up to 18 years old are available by appointment. This service is free for children who are not insured, whose insurance does not cover well-child exams or who have not met their insurance deductible. These screenings may be used for school and camp physicals, but cannot be used for athletic physicals. The fee for those who do not meet the above criteria is $27.

  • TUBERCULOSIS SCREENING: the Mantoux skin test screens for exposure to tuberculosis are available by appointment on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The fee is $10, plus a $10 administration fee.

  • LEAD SCREENING: Lead screening is provided for all children from 1 to 6 years old. The screenings are done at the La Crosse County Public Health Nursing, second floor. A finger stick blood sample will be obtained.

  • IMMUNIZATION CLINICS: All childhood immunizations are available. This includes meningococcal for ages 11 to 18 and HPV for girls 18 and younger. There is an administrative fee of $10 per visit for adults and children. Adult vaccines available include hepatitis B ($37), pneumovax ($30), tetanus (free), MMR ($45); Tdap (free) and hepatitis A ($22).

    Immunization clinics will be held from 5:30 to 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Onalaska Middle School, 711 Quincy St. Call for an appointment

  • PREGNANCY TESTING: Testing is available by appointment. The fee is $10.

  • FOOT CARE CLINICS: People unable to perform their own foot care can receive care by making an appointment at the following clinics for a fee of $22: Carroll Heights, Sept. 4, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; West Salem Senior Center, Sept. 11, 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; La Crosse County Health Department, second floor, Sept. 18, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Swifthaven, Sept. 25, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Gift certificates are available.

  • CHOLESTEROL/DIABETES SCREENING: La Crosse County Public Health Nursing is now offering cholesterol screening, 12-hour fast (with breakdown of HDL, LDL and trigylcerides), blood sugar testing and blood pressure. The blood sample used is taken from the finger tip. The results are available after approximately 15 minutes. The next clinic will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 7:40 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Call 785-9723 for an appointment. The cost is $17. HGBA1C (indicates a blood sugar control over the past two to three months) is an additional $12.

  • CAR SEAT CHECKS AND RENTAL: The La Crosse County Health Department offers free car seat checks to La Crosse County residents. Short-term car seat rental is available for three to four weeks. This program was designed to meet the need of relatives who are having visiting children. The fee for the rental is $10 with a deposit of $20. The deposit will be returned when the car seat is returned on time and in good condition.

  • HIV TESTING: The health department offers HIV testing every Thursday. Cost for the test is on a sliding fee scale.
