The Phil Wall Classic horsehoe competition at Kornfest drew 10 entries for the first annual singles competition Saturday and 21 teams for the fourth annual doubles tournament Sunday.

Jim Heim of Holmen won the singles event, with Jim Harris of Mindoro taking second and Wayne Lemar of La Crosse in third.

Ron Wilcheck and Len Splett came out on top in Sunday’s doubles competition. Jim Heim and John Brophy teamed up for second place, while combos Pete Harris and Jim Harris and Peewee Severson and Tim Severson took third and fourth, respectively.

The tournament was established as a Holmen Kornfest tradition by Mike Wall in honor of his father, Phil, a Wisconsin Horsehoe Hall of Fame member.

Mike Wall put a lot of money and effort over the past few years into renovating and expanding the Halfway Creek Park horsehoe pits.

“I wanted Dad’s legacy to live on, and I wanted it very nice for the fellows when they came to play,” Wall said.
