LETTER: Offshore drilling not a viable solution

Sacrificing our coasts will not bring down — and keep down — energy prices.

Drilling our coasts will not solve the problem of high natural gas prices. It simply takes too long to develop a natural gas field to impact prices in the short term. The estimated long-term drop in natural gas prices from drilling new sites is so small that the average American would likely not notice it at all.

The honest answer to our oil problem is to use less of it, and that means better fuel economy faster and a shift toward renewable energy. Instead of the failed policies of the past, it’s time to break our addiction to fossil fuels by shifting our priorities-and our policies toward creating a clean energy economy.

Instead of offering real solutions on energy, global warming and transportation, we are being given false solutions and empty promises. Congress should continue to raise the fuel economy of our cars, encourage the use of renewable energy like wind and solar power and adopt other existing energy-saving technologies that cut pollution, curb global warming and create good jobs.

These solutions do not require us to put our beaches and our favorite vacation spots on the chopping block.

Doug La Follette is Wisconsin secretary of state.

" It's simple, if their is little or no oil they won't drill. So letting them drill in my backyard (where their is no oil) is pointless. Well it not totally pointless, it does give the liberals a chance to say..."We already have places for them to drill and they haven't taken advantage of them" I wonder why! Use common sense my friend. "

" in Alaska, Congress authorized the oil to be sold overseas--notably to Japan. It was only meant to be used for domestic consumption in response to the oil crisis of the 70's. I'm all for drilling anywhere they want. As long as the oil is only used for the USA. And before they authorize that drilling, let's stop the selling of Alaskan oil overseas. Otherwise this is a pig in a poke. "

" point out the fact that the oil companies already have leases to millions of acres of land that they have not drilled. The current leases that they seek for offshore drilling are to insure that their record profits will continue well beyond our lifetimes. If you are all willing to pay your hard earned dollars to oil companies earning billions of dollars of profit in a tight economy at the expense of our environment, then you should pay extra taxes for those of who don't want to continue padding the profits for a few companies. "

" Oil has been drilled of the coast of New Orleans for decades. Good thing no one goes their...oh wait... "

" Apologies. That should be "New Jersy alone imports 220 million barrels a YEAR! Sorry "

Geophys wrote on Aug 15, 2008 7:25 AM:

" Dear Sir,

Your coasts are already at risk. Foreign oil does not appear out of the air. It comes in tankers which, I am sorry to tell you, are MUCH more likely to spill on your pretty beaches than production platforms or their pipelines.

New Jersey alone imports about 220 million barrels a day. California gets 60% of refinery feedstock in tankers, 20 from Alaska and 40 foreign.

From offshore drilling, we, as owners of the resource receive 18 percent of the oil in royalties (at these prices that adds up quickly), with tax revenues and lease fees totaling 40%. Oh, and jobs lots of jobs.

From imports we get the oil alone and a GREATER risk of spills. My state allows drilling in state waters and so we have a budget surplus, low unemployment, high wages, nice beaches and clean air and water (despite what imaginative lies you may have heard).

Unfortunately we, too, must accept the tankers to make gasoline for you people who don't want to develop America's resources. "
