Mark Trautmann of Boy Scout Troop 21 was honored at a special Eagle Scout ceremony June 28 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Onalaska.
To earn Scouting’s highest award, Trautmann earned 30 merit badges, served as a leader in his troop and completed a major community service project.
Tratumann’s service project took place throughout the village of Holmen. Leading Troop 21’s Scouts and adults, Trautmann labeled stormwater drains with “drains to creek” in hopes that people won’t pour hazardous substances down them. In all, the Scouts labeled 290 stormwater drains.
Trautmann has been a member of Troop 21 for seven years and has been chaplain’s aid, assistant patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He especially enjoyed the national Scout Jamboree in 2005 and his sea base experience on an uninhabited island off the coast of Florida.
At Trautmann’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor, his brother, David, served as master of ceremonies. State Sen. Dan Kapanke, R-La Crosse, spoke and presented Trautmann with a citation honoring him. Rod Griffing also presented a citation from Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem, who did not attend the ceremony, as well as a flag that had flown over the state Capitol.
Troop 21 Scoutmaster Jay Hesselberg presented Trautmann with his Eagle Scout medal and badge and spoke of his “eagle trail.”
Trautmann is a senior at Holmen High School, where he is president of the Student Council and the student representative to the Holmen School Board. He is involved in National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, band, choir, ski club, SADD, drama, assembly committee and the Renaissance Action Team.
