Carol A. Howe

ONALASKA — Carol A. Howe, 53, of Onalaska passed away peacefully with her family by her side, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison (Wis.).

She was born in La Crosse on Sept. 22, 1954, to Joe and Harriet (Howard) Guepfer. Carol married Larry Howe on Nov. 20, 1990, in La Crosse.

Carol was a kind and generous person who would always put the needs of others before her own. She dearly loved her family and, in recent years, enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Carol is survived by her husband, Larry; two sons, Ryan Bilskemper of Holmen, Wis., and David (Jennifer) Fruth of Minnesota City, Minn.; three stepchildren, Kari Helgerson (fiancé, Jason Singkofer) of Trempealeau, Wis., Mandy (Jason) Hess of Onalaska and Michael (Christina) Howe of Galesville, Wis.; five grandchildren, Darrel and Davis Helgerson, Megan and Jossilyn Hess and Ayden Fruth; and her father, Joe Guepfer of La Crosse. She is further survived by two brothers, Howard Guepfer of La Crosse and David (Donna) Guepfer of Onalaska; two sisters, Nancy Guepfer (fiancé, Dave Case) of Ohio and Gail Guepfer of Onalaska; nieces and nephews, Kyle, Kayla and Mckenna Guepfer; and her special companion, her chihuahua Brownie. Carol was preceded in death by her mother, Harriet; George Bilskemper, the father of Ryan and David; and by a sister-in-law, Nancy Powers-Guepfer.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Carol’s life at a memorial gathering to be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. Private burial will take place at Crucifixion Cemetery in La Crescent at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Brice Prairie First Responders in lieu of flowers.

Carol’s family would like to extend a special thanks to everyone at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center and the University of Wisconsin Hospital transplant team.
